Dr. Payne earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with a specialization in Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology, in 1997 from the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Payne completed the requirements to become Board Certified in Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology in 2009. She completed a Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology from New Mexico State University in 2021.
Dr. Payne completed extensive clinical training in diagnosis of mental health disorders, psychological evaluation, and psychotherapy through her doctoral program, continuing education, and certifications since her initial training. Dr. Payne was trained first as a generalist, treating all ages, and then completed additional education and clinical experiences to specialize in working with a pediatric population (ages 5-25). Dr. Payne has worked as an outpatient psychologist providing evaluation and psychotherapy services to youth and families in Iowa since 1997.
To become certified to prescribe as a psychologist in Iowa, Dr. Payne completed clinical experience focused on physical assessment and clinical management of psychiatric medications to treat mental health disorders. She worked with physicians learning physical assessment and the impact of medical conditions on mental health disorders. She completed focused experience in treating mental health disorders with medications with Dr. David Widitz, a board certified psychiatrist. Dr. Payne had 600 patient contacts during 400 hours of experience over the course of a year with medical professionals. As a conditional prescribing psychologist, Dr. Payne was supervised by Dr. Widitz for two years before becoming an independent Prescribing Psychologist in 2024. She collaborates with patients' primary care physicians to provide safe and effective treatment with integration of psychotherapy and medication. Dr. Payne works with a collaborating physician, Dr. Adam Woods, who provides consultation and review as needed.
